Winter is coming

Winter is coming

The summer months are coming to an end here in Michigan, when you look back you quickly realize how fast they come and go. Winter months here can be long and dreadful if you do not go out side and enjoy what nature has given you. The best thing, there is no mosquitos to eat you alive when you are trying to take pictures. Winter has its own beauty.

Where I grew up, winter was a little bit different then in Michigan. I am from central southern California, so winter was usually around 30 - 50 degrees and I only remember it snowing one time. I always wanted snowy winters as a kid, well, I certainly enjoy them now! My favorite part about winter, is just sitting out side in the quite and listening to the snow fall. It is very relaxing. This is a sound you can not explain to someone, you just need to experience it.

The way snow falls and covers nature has its own beauty, every year it is different. The river flows with freezing temperatures. Ice forming on top connecting mounds of snow to the moving water. Animals surviving on just enough to get them to the next meal.

Winter has so many great opportunities for photography, you just need to be patient and stay warm on long walks. Having the right gear certainly helps with this. Hiking in the snow can have its own challenges, however taking your time enjoy all the crunchy snow walks to get to great places. To see your favorite summer spots covered in snow is always and adventure.

My wife's favorite type of tree is a Birch tree. The more I see them the more I am starting to enjoy them. Not because of the type of tree, but because they have so many layers and colors during its life stages. Every tree is always something new and different. During the winter months they bring out great contrasting colors.

Its amazing how strong trees are. You really do not realize this until you see how much abuse they take during the winter months with snow fall, blistering cold and wind from blizzards. Walking through a tunnel of trees during snow fall is a peaceful event. Watching and listening to snow fall on to the trees is very peaceful.

Everyone loves a great snowman! Does not matter you age, a snowman always puts smiles on peoples faces. The best ones are when you are not expecting them.

My wife and I have been taking adventures in warmer climates during the winter months. It is a great break in the daily routine to go out and relax in the sunny, humid climates. Certainly is not fun coming back to negative degree weather... When you can not take the cold dark days any more, then jump on a plane to somewhere warm!
